ecology of absence

Sun Theatre

LOCATION: 3617 Grandel Square; Midtown; Saint Louis, Missouri
OTHER NAMES: Victoria Theater; Liberty Theater; Lyn Theatre; 400 Club; World Theatre
DATE OF CONSTRUCTION: 1913
ARCHITECT: Widmann and Walsh
DATE OF ABANDONMENT: 1981 - present
OWNER: Grand Center, Inc.

This majestic 1500-seat theater retains its striking 1950's-era neon sign, recently restored by Grand Center, Inc., which keeps it lit year-round as part of its beautification efforts. Long vacant, the Sun has never had steady use although its fine Beaux Arts facade attracts interest from passers-by and harmonizes with the ecclectic Pythian Building two doors east.

Rather than detail the contorted history of the names and owners of this theater, we refer you to Cinema Treasures, which has a long history of the theater.

Current plans call for wrecking the theater building and moving the facade a half-block east to adorn a new theater next door to Powell Hall on Grand Boulevard.
