The Destruction of McRee Town: October 2004

October 31, 2004

Between 3:00 and 4:00 a.m. on October 26, 2004, the St. Louis Fire Department received calls for fires at three properties owned by the Garden District Commission: one in the 4000 block of Folsom, seen below; one in the 4000 block of McRee; and one in an apartment building at 1854 S. 39th Street. Firefighters suspected arson. As the remaking of old McRee City continued, the fires served as signs of the area's residual instability -- an instability forged over the years through highway construction, police neglect and finally annihilation.
