LOCATION: Spanning the Mississippi River between East Saint Louis, Illinois (at Tenth Street) and Saint Louis, Missouri (at Seventh Street) The imposing Douglas MacArthur Bridge, which carries a high volume of rail traffic, has a road deck that has been abandoned since 1981 and unusable since the removal of a large section in 1989. These photos show the East Saint Louis approach to the bridge on a recent day when an Illinois Department of Transportation crew was removing several more sections of the road deck above Route 3. From back of the postcard that appears below: "Cost Six Million Dollars. Dedicated January 1917. Length 2,022 ft. It is one of the longest bridges in the world. East railway approach 13,336 ft. West railway approach 2,900 ft. East highway approach 5,308 ft. West highway approach 2,468 ft."
