Warehouse at 801 Howard Street

LOCATION: 801 Howard Street between 8th and 9th Streets; North Riverfront; Saint Louis, Missouri
DATE OF CONSTRUCTION: 1950s
DATE OF DEMOLITION: August 2006
OWNER: Howard Street Storage, Inc.

These photographs depict the the burned remains of a one-story warehouse on Howard Street between 8th and 9th on the city's near north side. The warehouse seemed to have been built sometime in the 1950's or 1960's and probably had a plain facade of red-orange brick. We had seen the remains from the interstate and wanted to investigate. Upon our arrival on the site, we found many discarded fireworks that maybe caused the fire that destroyed the building. The Saint Louis Post-Dispatch did not report the fire, which is not a notable fact since that paper has ceased most coverage of small fires in the city. Records indicate that this warehouse building was owned by the Land Reutilization Authority since 1994, so it was probably vacant at the time of the fire.

The broken-down fire truck was sitting unused just a few yards behind the building.

For two years, the warehouse sat in almost the same condition that it was in when we photographed it in 2004. The LRA ignored numerous citizen complaints, but eventually sold it to a company that is building a storage facility. The new owner demolished the wreck immediately after closing on the property in August 2006.
