Warehouse on Carter Street

LOCATION: Carter Street at Grand Avenue; Fairground; Saint Louis, Missouri
DATE OF CONSTRUCTION: 1910's

We noticed this fire-wrecked warehouse building in north St. Louis in August 2004, just a week after we photographed a similar fire at a similar building on Howard Street. This building stood on the south side of Carter Street on the block between Grand Avenue and Obear Avenue, starting at the alley and covering a the entire northwest corner of the block. Behind the building's remains is a lot grown up high with grass and weeds, indicating that this building was likely vacant at the time of the fire.

According to a short blurb in the Saint Louis Post-Dispatch, the fire occured on June 21, 2004 in the evening. Firefighters arrived on the scene of this five-alarm fire at 9:40 p.m., but the building was too far gone to enter. According to the Post-Dispatch, the building was indeed empty except for some barrels. The fire was under control by 10:30 p.m.

We know little else about this building, except that it appears to date from the 1910's.
