Toward a Definition of Urban Ecology
Michael R. Allen

Ecology is the complex process by which all active organic matter relates.

The urban is the complex process by which a species—primarily human beings—settles itself in dense concentrations.

Urban ecology then studies how these dense concentrations relate to active organic matter.

Urban ecology studies how organic matter relates to and within these dense concentrations.

Thus, urban ecology is the complex process by which active organic matter relates to and within dense concentrations of species.

Urban ecology is then at least a doubling of living complexities.
